67% of tourists who come to Alicante are staying in tourist homes

ALICANTE / VALÈNCIA 67% of tourists who come to Alicante do so in tourist apartments. In València, 60.3% of tourists who arrive in Valencia stay in tourist homes that were previously residential. This is included in the report on tourism prospects for 2018 of Exceltur, where they analyze the tourism situation in 2017 and the forecasts for 2018. Alicante is one of the cities with the highest percentage behind Malaga.

Exceltur collects the structure of the accommodation in the 15 Spanish urban destinations with the greatest tourist pressure, among which Alicante and València. According to data from the INE and P2P platforms, only 37.4% of the stays in the city have been in lodgings given as hotels, tourist apartments or campsites while 2.3% are cruise passengers.

According to the Exceltur report, the main factor determining the increase in tourist pressure in Spanish cities is the conversion of houses into tourist accommodation. “In the cities where there has been a greater social response to tourism are those with a significant percentage of tourist housing,” they note.

An example of this situation is Barcelona, ​​San Sebastian or Palma de Mallorca, where the pressure on tourists housed in homes exceeds 50% of the total tourist flow, while the impact of cruises is limited, as in Valencia.

València: 6 tourists per 100 inhabitants

The report measures tourist pressure levels relating the resident population and the urban area of ​​the 15 main Spanish tourist cities and points out that it is generally low, with 7.4 tourists for every 100 residents on average per year.

The greatest pressure occurs on specific days when travelers from its surroundings converge and the arrival of several cruise ships at the same time and in places of greatest tourist attraction, which increases the figure significantly.

In fact, recognizes that most cities where there have been episodes of response to tourism in 2017 are among those with higher rates of tourism pressure, highlighting the cities of Granada -11.7-, Barcelona -11.1 – and San Sebastian -10.7-.

In the case of València, the tourist pressure would be 6%, to the tail of the top 15, and behind Alicante, which scores 8.4%.

The Comunitat continues to grow in tourists

The tourism sector of the Comunitat Valenciana grew by 6.2% in 2017, which places it together with Murcia as the destination of ‘sun and beach’ that grows the most. In the whole of the State, the sector closed 2017 with an increase of the tourist activity of 4,4%, chaining eight consecutive years of growth, that have allowed to elevate his contribution to the Spanish economy until 11,5%, in a year record for Spain in tourist entry and in expenditure made that places it as the second world tourism power.
